Species group: Xiphosurus cuvieri species group (fide NICHOLSON et al. 2012).
EtymologyNamed after the type locality.

A. b. albocellatus was named after Latin "albus" for "white" and "ocellus" for "eye," in allusion to the white spots that are typical of the holotype.

A. b. ininquinatus was named after Latin ininquinatus, meaning “nonspotted” in allusion to the absence of dorsal spotting in the lowland subspecies” (Cullom & Schwartz 1980:97).

A. b. mulitus was named after one of those intersections from Pedernales to Los Arroyos, called El Mulito by the local inhabitants (hence the name mulitus)” (Cullom & Schwartz 1980:98).
