Distribution | Honduras (Yoro), 1180-1800 m elevation. Type locality: “2.5 km airline km NNE La Fortuna, 15°26’N, 87°18’W, 1600 m elevation, Cordillera Nombre de Dios, Departamento de Yoro, Honduras” |
Reproduction | oviparous |
Types | Holotype: USNM 541012 |
Diagnosis | Diagnosis: Norops yoroensis can be distinguished from N. cupreus and N. macrophallus by having a unicolor dewlap (bicolor with a darker colored basal spot in N. cupreus and N. macrophallus) that is Spectrum Orange (outer area pinkish rose, Maroon, Deep Vinaceous, Warm Sepia, or brown in N. cupreus; outer area Flesh Color with Vinaceous tinge in N. macrophallus [see Köhler and Kreutz, 1999]). Norops yoroensis can be distinguished from N. villai by dewlap color (Spectrum Orange versus chocolate-colored [see Fitch and Henderson, 1976]). Norops yoroensis differs further from N. cupreus, N. macrophallus, and N. villai by having a single anterior nasal scale (versus divided) and poorly defined supraorbital semicircles (versus well defined). Two other species of similarly-sized Norops (N. limifrons [Cope, 1862] and N. rodriguezii [Bocourt, 1873]) occurring in Honduras also have single anterior nasal scales. Norops yoroensis differs from these two species in having a large uniform Orange-Rufous male dewlap (dewlap small and dirty white with a pale yellow basal spot in N. limifrons; dewlap small with a Cinnamon Rufous basal part and a Spectrum Orange apical part in N. rodriguezii) and distinctly keeled and imbricate ventral scales (ventrals smooth and non-imbricate in N. limifrons and N. rodriguezii). Norops yoroensis can be distinguished from all other species of Norops of Central America and Mexico by the combination of having distinctly keeled and imbricate ventral scales, a single anterior nasal scale, homogeneouslateral scales, no axillary pocket, a small size (males to 41 mm SVL, females to 47 mm), a large male dewlap that extends well onto the venter past the level of the axillae, and a uniformly Orange-Rufous male dewlap in life (except dewlap scales white with gray flecks). |
