Diagnosis 
CommentHabitat: sandy terrestrial.

One of the few anole species that lacks the subdigital lamellae (toe pads) and adapted to a sandy terrestrial life.

Species group: Norops auratus Species Group (fide Nicholson et al. 2012) 
EtymologyNamed after Latin onca, specific epithet of the jaguar, Panthera onca, from P. onça, its vernacular name in Brazil. [“...Colour pale brown, variegated with darker, in the form of large rhombic spots...”]. (from Esteban Lavilla, pers. comm., May 2024)
