Diagnosis | Diagnosis. A large anole with males reaching a maximum SVL of 122 mm and females reaching 107 mm. Head with small, keeled scales; no distinctly enlarged supraocular scales; 5–6 scales between small interparietal and supraorbital semicircles. Dorsal scales small, keeled; 86–104 scales along middorsal line from axilla to groin; 144–154 scales around midbody; ventrals slightly larger than dorsals and weakly keeled or smooth; 77–88 scales along midventral line between axilla and groin. Tibia 0.25-0.28 times SVL. Green dorsally; adult males usually with faint oblique bands, much darker and bolder on females and juveniles. Dewlap in males, very large reaching almost midbelly; with widely separated, horizontal rows of two or three scales wide; yellow-orange, usually with red area anteriorly and green or chartreuse scales; dewlap in females, small and reaching insertion of limbs; blackish skin and green scales [from UGUETO et al. 2009]. |
Comment | Distribution: Not listed by KÖHLER 2000. Absent from Panama fide Rivas and Manzanilla. 1999.
Savage and Talbot (1978) reported that one of the two specimens of Peters’ original description of A. squamulatus was in fact an A. frenatus mistakenly believed to have come from Puerto Cabello, Venezuela.
