Comment | For illustrations see Mertens, 1939; Mertens, 1940; Cochran, 1941; Schwartz, 1968 b. Synonymy: Anolis brevirostris is listed as a synonym of A. distichus by BOULENGER (1885) but is now considered as a valid species. Anolis citrinellus COPE 1864 was previously considered a synonym of A. cybotes but moved to the synonymy of A. distichus by Köhler et al. 2019. Here we mostly follow Myers et al. 2020 who were unable to diagnose “species” within A. distichus. Poe et al. 2017 recognize A. vinosus based on Ng et al. 2013 (J. Hered. 2013:104: 862–873), but the latter paper doesn’t even mention A. vinosus. Subspecies: GLOR & LAPORT 2012 elevated several subspecies to full species rank, including aurifer, dominicensis, favillarum, ignigularis, properus, ravitergum, and vinosus. Similarly, MacGuigan et al. 2017 found that A. distichus is comprised of numerous distinct populations that likely warrant recognition as distinct species. However, neither were able to provide diagnostic phenotypic traits to distinguish the candidate species identified on the basis of genomic differentiation. MacGuigan et al. also found that “dewlap color is not by itself a reliable diagnostic trait in the A. distichus complex, and perhaps in anoles more broadly”. Note however, that the distichus complex has always been recognized as the major exception to the idea that dewlap color variation relates to reproductive isolation. Mertens 1939 also described A. d. albidogularis which is not mentioned in the recent literature. Species group: Ctenonotus distichus species group (fide NICHOLSON et al. 2012). Diet: a large percentage of the diet of this species (50-80%) consists of ants (Lucas et al. 2023). Hybridization: A. d. dominicensis intergrades with A. d. ignigularis in Cordillera Central; A. d. favillarum is possibly intergrading with A. d. dominicensis in Pedernales Province. A. d. properus intergrades with A. d. ignigularis in NE La Romana. A. d. ravitergum intergrades with A. (d.) ignigularis in southern Peravia Province, and possibly with A. (d.) dominicensis in Azua Province. A. d. vinosus intergrades with A. (d.) aurifer at Cavaillon and Plaine Martin, and with A. (d.) suppar between Roche-à-Bateaux and Coteaux. Etymology | Named after Latin distichus, a, um, ‘which has two ranks’. Anolis distichus dominicensis was named after the presence of this species in the Dominican Republic. Anolis distichus biminiensis was named after the type locality, Bimini Island. Anolis distichus dapsilis was named after Latin dapsilis = plentiful, referring to the fact that the subspecies appears to be the “commonest subspecies of A. distichus in the Bahamas” Anolis distichus dominicensis was named after the type locality on the Dominican Republic. Anolis distichus favillarum was named after Latin, favilla = glowing ashes, apparently after the color pattern in this subspecies. Anolis distichus floridanus was named after its type locality in Florida. Anolis distichus ocior was named after Latin ocior = more rapid, apparently referring to the speed with which it moves. Anolis distichus patruelis was named after Latin, patruelis = relating to a cousin Anolis distichus properus was named after Latin properus, apparently after its quick movements. Anolis distichus ravitergum was named after Latin, ravum = gray and Latin tergum = back, after the dorsal color. Anolis distichus sejunctus was named after Latin sejungere = to sever, without further explanations by Schwartz, but possibly referring to the spots on the dorsum, compared to stripes dominicensis, or referring to sejunctus having 1/1 scales between the semicircles and the interparietal (0/0) in the two Bahaman subspecies). Anolis distichus suppar was named after Latin suppar = almost equal. Anolis distichus tostus was named after Latin torrere = to parch, to toast, without further explanation by Schwarz, possibly referring to the yellow-tan dorsum, which has the color of toasted bread. Anolis distichus vinosus was named after Latin, vinosus = full of wine, after the wine-red centered dewlap. |
