Etymology | Named after Latin marmoratus, a, um, from the participle of marmoro, ‘covered with marble, marbled’, in reference to the marbling on the head and neck. A. m. alliaceus was named after Latin allium or alium, ‘garlic’and the suffix -aceus, a, um, ‘which resembles to, which has the nature of’. Cope (1864) did not explain his choice (Fretey 2023). A. m. caryae was named after Margaret M. Cary who sponsored the first trip of Lazell to the Caribbean (Fretey 2023). A. m. girafus has no known etymology and may be an arbitrary combination of letters. Lazell (1964: 337) indicates that “The name girafus has been invented to indicate the reticulate pattern” (Fretey 2023). A. m. inornatus was named after Latin inornatus, a, um, = ‘unadorned (Fretey 2023). A. m. setosus was named after Latin setosus (or saetosus), a, um, ‘bristly, covered with hair’ (Fretey 2023). A. m. speciosus was named after Latin speciosus, a, um, = ‘of beautiful appearance’ (Fretey 2023). |
