DistributionW Malaysia, Borneo (Sabah)

Type locality: ‘‘Sungei Ngeram, near Merapoh, N. Pahang, Malay Peninsula, at about 800 feet elevation”.
Reproductionoviparous
TypesHolotype: BMNH 1946.1.17.4, female; paratype: Raffles Museum, female, from KualaTahan; N. Pahang, 750 feet altitude.
DiagnosisDescription of the Type: Head small, not distinct from neck; eye minute-; rostral higher than broad, extending well on to the upper'surface of the snout; -an azygous shield separating the nasals and prefrontals from one another; frontal semicircular in shape, broader than long, about twice as large as the supraocular; a single large temporal shield; four supralabials, third highest, touching the eye, fourth longest. Scales smooth, in 17 : 17 : 17 rows; ventrals 222, scarcely larger than the adjacent shields; subcaudals 7. The paratype does not differ in any important particulars from the type. The frontal shield is smaller and about as broad as long; there are 223 ventral shields and 7 subcaudal. (Smith 1940: 447).

Colouration: dark, purplish brown, with large, distant, whitish, rounded or oval spots, paired or alternating with one (?? --- 1 or 2 lines missing ---). The coloration of the paratype is the same as the holotype, with, in addition, some light mottling along the ventral shields. The coloration of A. leonardi appears to be almost identical with that of A. weberi (see De Rooij 1917: 35). The white flank-line which De Rooij shows is faintly indicated in some parts of the body of A. leonardi by a series of dots (Smith 1940: 447).

Drawing in Smith 1940: 448.
CommentAnomochilus was previously considered as a member of the family Uropeltidae.

Abundance: A. leonardi is known from only 5 specimens from peninsular Malaysia and one from Malaysian Borneo.
EtymologyNamed after G. R. Leonard who collected the holotype.
