Diagnosis | Diagnosis: Atractus taphorni can be distinguished from all congeners by the following combination of characters: (1) dorsal scale rows smooth, 15/15/15; (2) postoculars two; (3) loreal long; (4) temporal formula 1 + 2; (5) supralabials usually seven, 3 and 4 contacting eye; (6) infralabials usually seven, 1−3 contacting chinshields; (7) maxillary teeth 10−12; (8) gular scale rows usually three; (9) preventrals usually three (10) ventrals 150−160 in females, 153−155 in males; (11) subcaudals 17−20 in females, 23−29 in males; (12) in preservative, dorsum dark brown or black with vertebral and dorsolateral black stripe cream bordered; (13) in preservative, ventral ground color dark brown to black, sometimes with cream lateral stripes covering paraventral region; (14) moderate body size, females reaching 433 mm SVL, males 408 mm SVL; (15) tail length moderate long in females (10.0−11.7% SVL) and males (11.8−14.2% SVL); (16) hemipenis slightly bilobed, non‐capitate, non‐calyculate; (17) laterosphenoid present, well developed.
