DiagnosisDiagnosis: Atractus nigriventris can be distinguished from all congeners by the following combination of characters: (1) dorsal scale rows smooth, 17/17/17; (2) postoculars two; (3) loreal long; (4) temporal formula 1 + 2; (5) supralabials seven or eight, 3 and 4 or 4 and 5 contacting eye; (6) infralabials seven or eight, 1−3 or 1−4 contacting chin-shields; (7) maxillary teeth 9−13; (8) gular scale rows three or four; (9) preventrals usually four; (10) ventrals 161−174 in females, 155−162 in males; (11) subcaudals 23−32 in females, 28−33 in males; (12) in preservative, dorsum brown with black spots or dots on the paravertebral region, juveniles displaying more marks above paravertebral region; (13) in preservative, ventral ground color uniformly black or cream with black blotches linearly arranged, forming three irregular longitudinal stripes; (14) moderate body size, females reaching 387 mm SVL, males 346 mm SVL; (15) moderate tail length in females (10.9−13.2% SVL) and males (13.0−15.4% SVL); (16) hemipenis moderately bilobed (based on fully retracted organ); (17) laterosphenoid unknown. Etymology: Atractus trivittatus was probably named after Latin trivittatus, who bears three ribbons or bands.
