Comment | Synonymy mostly that of Dixon (1973). Donoso-Barros (1968) considered B. marcelae to be a subspecies of B. lineata. Shreve (1947) suggested that B. lineata and B. anomala might not be conspecific. He noted that Boulenger’s description stated the dorsal scales were quadrangular and suggests this led Roux into thinking his specimen was new. Burt and Burt (1931) placed B. lineata in the B. cophias group. Boulenger’s description also reports five longitudinal dorsal stripes, with Shreve noting that none of the specimens he examined had more than three. Murphy et al. 2019 suspect that B. anomala Roux is a valid species that was placed in the synonymy of B. lineata by Burt and Burt (1933), but there is not enough information available on its morphology to distinguish it from that species. Subspecies: Intermediate specimens between B. h. heteropa and B. h. trinitatis are known from eastern Venezuela but intermediates between B. h. lineata and B. h. heteropa are unknown although both subspecies have been recorded from nearby areas (B. h. heteropa from la Guaira, Vargas State and B. h. lineata from Distrito Federal, Caracas) (RIVAS et al. 2012).
