Type species: Bothrops hyopora AMARAL 1935 is the type species of the genus Bothrocophias GUTBERLET & CAMPBELL 2001. 
EtymologyNamed after Greek hyo, from hûs (ὗς), pig + Greek prorar (πρόπαρ), before, in front of. (Esteban Lavilla, pers. comm., April 2024)

The genus was named after Greek bothros (βόθρος), pit, hole, trench + Greek cophias (κοφιας), snake, adder.
