Comment | Synonymy: Amphiglossus (Brachyseps) gastrostictus is probably a synonym of Brachyseps macrocercus (Erens et al. 2016, electronic supplement). The genus Mesomycterus COPE 1892 is a senior synonym of Brachyseps, but since the former has not been used in the literature it may qualify as nomen oblitum. The taxonomy of Brachyseps / Mesomycterus is currently in flux but a revision is under way (M. Vences, pers. comm., 9 April 2025). Type species: Gongylus macrocercus GÜNTHER 1882: 263 is the type species of the genus Brachyseps ERENS et al. 2017. Phylogenetics of trait evolution in the genus Brachyseps: Belluardo et al. 2022. NCBI taxonID: 249440 [macrocercus] Reference images: see Uetz et al. 2024 for high-resolution reference images for this species. |
Etymology | Named after Greek gastros = belly, stomach, and sticto, "spotted", referring to the ventral spotting. The genus was named after Greek brachys (βραχύς), short, and Greek seps, a term often used for elongated snake-like animals. |
