DiagnosisDiagnosis: A slender limbed species with a SVL of 94-113 mm (n = 5), and a long tail (372-384 mm, n = 5, 330 - 363% of SVL). Tympanum about half diameter of orbit or little more (Ratio 0.57-0.68). Head covered above with small uniform keeled scales, no enlarged or compressed scales between orbit and tympanum. Nuchal crest indicated by very small erect scales, dorsal crest absent. Mental small, tree postmentals (Fig. 12), gular region covered with little enlarged keeled scales, smaller than ventrals. Body scales small, feebly keeled, homogenous in 45-53 midbody scale rows, 1-2 uppermost scale rows pointing upward, 2 parallel, others directed downwards. 4 keeled dorsolateral scales, 8 smooth laterals. Ventrals much larger than dorsals, strongly keeled. Fifth toe small, smaller than fourth finger. It can be distinguished from other congeners by the combination of small dorsal scales, smaller fifth toe than fourth finger, no enlarged scales behind upper corner of orbit, three postmentals and a light longitudinal band without dark dots and tail without bark bands.

The Bronchocela cristatella in Chan-ard et al (1999, p. 92) is actually B. smaragdina [Michael Cota, pers. comm.]. 
EtymologyNamed after Latin “smaragdinus” for “emerald,” an obvious allusion to the bright green ground color of this species.
