Comment | Synonymy: Chalcides simonyi was originally classified as Ch. polylepis occidentalis (LANZA 1957) or considered as a synonym of Ch. viridanus (e.g. BOULENGER 1892) but is now considered as a valid species by several authors (BROWN & PERSTANO 1998, BÖHME 2010) based on molecular data (e.g. CARRANZA et al. 2008). Note that Steindachner confusingly described both Ch. viridanus var. simonyi and Ch. simonyi as new in two different papers with overlapping pagination (Steindachner 1891: 301, 304) (”...einige neue... arten”). Subspecies: Chalcides viridanus coeruleopunctatus SALVADOR 1975 has been elevated to full species status. |
Etymology | Named after Prof. Oskar Simony (who also discovered Gallotia simonyi). |
