CommentDistribution: Boella tenella has been (erroneously) reported from Mexico.

Type species: Boa inornata REINHARDT 1843: 253 is the type species of the genus Chilabothrus DUMÉRIL & BIBRON 1844.

Phylogenetics: see Onary et al. 2018 for fossil data on this genus.

Habitat: partly arboreal (Harrington et al. 2018).

Extinct species of the genus Chilabothrus: C. stanolseni (Vanzolini 1952).
EtymologyNamed after Latin inōrnātus (in- “not” +‎ ōrnātus “adorned, decorated”.) It refers to the species lack of adornment. (M. Salimian, pers. comm., 9 Sep 2024)

The genus was named after the Greek cheilos, meaning "lip", á "without" and bothros "pits", probably due to the fact that some species have labial pits and others do not.
