Distribution | Hispaniola
striatus: Hispaniola; Île de la Gonâve; Isla Saona; intergrades with E. s. exagistus. Type locality: Santo Domingo and St. Thomas; restricted by Sheplan and Schwartz, 1974, to the city of Santo Domingo, Distrito Nacional, República Dominicana.
exagistus: Hispaniola: Haiti, distal portion of the Tiburon Peninsula, east to Les Basses, but presumably occurring further east. Type locality: Camp Perrin, Departement du Sud, Haiti.
warreni: Île de la Tortue; Type locality: Vicinity of Palmiste, lIe de la Tortue, Haiti.

Synonymy: many subspecies previously assigned to Epicrates striatus are now assigned to Chilabothrus strigilatus.
Habitat: partly arboreal (Harrington et al. 2018). |
Etymology | Named after Latin stria = groove or furrow, often for stripe or line, even though this species does not have longitudinal stripes.
C. s. exagistus was named after the Greek for "mystical," in reference to the fact that in vodoun (voodoo), snakes are associated with the loa Damballa.
C. s. warreni was named after the collector of the type, C. R. Warren (although Sheplan & Schwartz say “taken August 15 - 27, 1970, by native collector for C. R. Warren.” |
