Type locality: "Tabasco, Mexico".  
Reproductionoviparous. 
TypesHolotype: USNM 6525; according to Iverson (1986:132), parts of the same specimen originally were catalogued as both USNM 6518 and 6525 (after KING & BURKE 1989).
Holotype: MNHN Paris 1600, adult female, collector and date unknown (not examined by authors) [megalocephalus]

Type species: Claudius angustatus COPE 1865 is the type species of the genus Claudius COPE 1865.

Habitat: freshwater (swamps, quiet rivers)

Karyotype: Moon (1974) reported the diploid chromosome
number as 54. 
EtymologyNamed after Latin angustare, to make narrow, and refers to its narrow bridge.

The genus is probably named after Latin claudus, meaning defective, and refers to the diminutive plastron.
