EtymologyNamed after Latin sub-, close to, almost, about + Latin tessellatus, of small square stones, checkered, tesselated. ["…Scales of body slightly imbricate and arranged in transverse rows…"].

The genus was named after Greek kordyle (κορδύλη), club, cudgel; knob, swelling, or bulge; wart-like growth + Greek sauros (σαῦρος), lizard. [“….The tail elongate, conical, tapering, with rings of strongly keeled, rather elongate scales…”].
