Type locality: 1.8 mi. west of the pass, Puetro Los Mazos, on Mexican Highway No 80, Jalisco, Mexico [maybe in error, fide REYES-VELASCO et al. 2010].

Conservation: one of the 30 most endangered viper species (Maritz et al. 2016).Only about 6 specimens have been found since its description.

Nomenclature: Hoser’s 2009 classification and nomenclature has been rejected as unnecessary and unavailable by WÜSTER & BERNILS 2011. 
Etymologynamed after the collector of the type specimen, Joseph R. Lannom, Jr.
