Type locality: Cerro Tancítaro, Michoacán, Mexico, elevation 3225 m (19° 24’ 13’’ N, 102° 19’ 45’’ W).

Nomenclature: Hoser’s 2009 classification and nomenclature has been rejected as unnecessary and unavailable by WÜSTER & BERNILS 2011.

Conservation: one of the 30 most endangered viper species (Maritz et al. 2016). 
EtymologyNamed after the type locality, Tancítaro and the Latin suffix -ensis, denoting place. The name Tancítaro is taken from the Tarascan language and means ‘‘place of offering.’’
