CommentSubspecies: Mertens (1928, 1931) distinguished more than 30 “forms” of this species, most of which he considered as subspecies. Other authors consider some of them as valid species, some as mere “variations”. Most forms have been also named (or confused with) [Crypto-]Ablepharus peronii. BRYGOO (1986) synonymized Cryptoblepharus boutonii mayottensis MERTENS 1928: 83 with Cryptoblepharus (boutonii) gloriosus (Stejneger). Many of these forms are now considered as valid species.

Diet: Canaris (1973) recorded stomach contents of 82 specimens as comprising 70% marine crustaceans and 27% insect remains.

Habitat: coastal habitats, hence sometimes classified as (partly) “marine”. See Diet.
EtymologyNamed for Louis Bouton, a French botanist.
