Synonymy: Freitas 2003: 86 considers quinquelineatus as a synonym of wuchereri.

Type species: Coluber 5-lineatus RADDI 1820: 339 is the type species of the genus Elapomorphus WIEGMANN in FITZINGER 1843. The genus is the the type genus of the tribe Elapomorphini which contains Apostolepis, Coronelaps, Elapomorphus, and Phalotris (fide Scrocchi et al. 2022).

Elapomorphini snakes are characterized by the following suite of characters: reduction of the number of supralabial scales to six; entire nasal plate; frontal bones dorsa- lly included by the anterior-lateral processes of the parietal and almost excluded from the reduced optic foramen; exoccipitals in contact on the dorsal surface of the condyle; second supralabial scale contacting the eye (Zaher et al., 2009, Scrocchi et al. 2022).
EtymologyNamed after Latin quinque = five, and linea = line.

The genus was possibly named after Greek elapos (ἐλαπρός), barbarism for ἐλαφρός, lightly, buoyantly + Greek morpha (μορφά), bodily form, build.
