Synonymy: BROADLEY (1998) elevated E. s. boulengeri to species status based on slightly differrent colour patterns. Synonymy mostly after BROADLEY in GOLAY et al. 1993: 134.

Distribution: reports from South Africa probably refer to E. boulengeri, previously a subspecies of Elapsoidea semiannulata. Not in East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi fide S. Spawls, pers. comm., 28 June 2018). See map in Broadley 1971: 603 (Fig. 7) and p. 601 (Fig. 5). Not in Liberia fide Senter & Chippaux 2022. Not in Eswatini (Swaziland) fide Wilkey & Naan 2025. 
EtymologyNamed after Latin for half-ringed from semi- (half) and annulata (ringed).
