BROADLEY (1998) elevated E. s. boulengeri to species status based on slightly differrent colour patterns. Synonymy mostly after BROADLEY in GOLAY et al. 1993: 134.

Distribution: Not in Angola fide Marques et al. 2018. See map in Broadley 1971: 603 (Fig. 7). 
EtymologyNamed after George Albert Boulenger (1858-1937), a Belgian-British herpetologist at the British Museum, London, and most productive alpha-taxonomist in herpetology (Uetz 2010, Uetz & Stylianou 2018).
