Type locality: Campina Grande, Paraíba, Brazil.

TypesHolotype: IVB (Instituto Vital Brazil), adult male, not numbered, collected by Arlindo de Assis. The type specimen is presumed to be lost (A. Melgarejo, cited in PASSOS & FERNANDES 2008).
Holotype: IBSP 9252 [xerophilus] 
DiagnosisDiagnosis: Distinguished from all continental Epicrates by having sub-cylindrical, hemipenial lobes long (about three times longer than wide), with reduced papillate rows. Additionally, differ from E. cenchria, E. maurus, and E. alvarezi by having dorsal ground color pale to dark brown in juveniles and adults; from E. crassus and E. maurus, by having ventrals generally . 245; from E. maurus, by having inverted hemipenis , 12 subcaudal scales long. Refer to Tables 6 and 7 for additional diagnostic features of the continental Epicrates. 
CommentSynonymy mostly after PASSOS & FERNANDES 2008 (who cited Machado 1945 with the wrong paper that does not describe E. assisi).

Authorship: Machado 1945 actually cites Ottilio 1944 as author (without providing a citation).

Etymology: Machado 1945 does not provide any explanation for the name.

Habitat: partly arboreal (Harrington et al. 2018).
