CommentDistribution: Does not occur on Mauritius (= Ile de France).

Variation: Highly variable species with many different color variants (see Müller et al. 2004 for a collection of photos). Grbic et al. 2015 found 9-15 clades that can be distinguished genetically and morphologically and which may be species. Negro & Laube (2023) present photos of many variants, including juveniles (which often do not have much of a pattern).

EtymologyNamed after L.: pardalis, panther, denoting the black colouration of the type specimen (Charles Klaver, pers. comm., 11 Jan 2023).
