Type locality: “Roques del Salmor bei Hierro, Kanaren”

machadoi: Spain (Hierro Island). Type locality: "Fuga de Gorreta" (Hierro Island)  
ReproductionClutch size: 9-12 eggs [Luef 2006] 
TypesSyntypes: NMW 16254, NMW 16255 etc.
Holotype: DZUL (probably). Live adult male, at the time of description (January 1989) in the custody of the "Dirección General del Medio Arhbiente" (Head Office of the Environment) of the regional Government of the Canary Islands. Captured in November 1985 by Mr. Carlos Naeslund and kept in captivity in the field station of Frontera (Hierro Island). The holotype will be deposited in the Museo Insular des Sciencias Naturales, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, after its death. 
Diagnosis 
CommentConservation: Gallotia simonyi bravoana has been elevated to full species status but is extinct fide MARTÍN & RANDO (2006).

Synonymy: Barahona et al. 2000 synonymized Gallotia goliath and Gallotia maxima with G. simonyi.

Subspecies: Mayer 2015 rejected the validity of G. s. machadoi, assuming they originated as variants through genetic drift, given their tiny range and small population size. 
EtymologyNamed after Oskar Simony from Vienna who collected the types in 1889. Barahona et al. (2000) showed that the extinct giant species Gallotia goliath and G. maxima are both synonymous with Gallotia simonyi. They suggest that the difference in size may be due to different life expectancies. Gallotia simonyi gomerana HUTTERER 1985 has been elevated to species status by Nogales et al. (2001).
