DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus): A genus of the family Gekkonidae that is easily recognized by the large flat imbricate cycloid (fish-scale) body scales that are shed easily—the cycloid scales and most of the underlying dermis can be autotomized; vertical pupil; digits strongly dilated with transverse undivided subdigital lamellae; all digits with a retractile claw; no preanal or femoral pores in males. CommentSynonymy: KÖHLER et al. 2009 synonymized anomala and modesta with typica.

Type species: Geckolepis typicus GRANDIDIER 1867 is the type species of the genus Geckolepis GRANDIDIER 1867.

Diversity: LEMME et al. (2013) described other Confirmed Candidate Species, based on genetic differences, which exhibit only little morphological diversity.

Behavior: nocturnal

EtymologyNamed after the Latin adjective typicus, supposedly referring to the species' morphology which was considered as being typical for Geckolepis.

The genus was named after gecko and Greek lepis = scale, for the unusual scalation in this genus.
