DiagnosisDiagnosis: A species of Geckolepis that differs from all other species of the genus by the following combination of characters: innermost pair of large postmental scales make contact with each other posterior to the mental scale (Types D and E) or are seperated by a median postmental scale (Type F), maximum SVL < 80 mm, infralabials to level of anterior margin of eye 3.0–4.6, 22–30 scale rows around the midbody, and adult body coloration often marked by heavy dark spots. Geckolepis maculata can be distinguished from G. typica by a combination of maximum SVL (< 80 mm vs. < 57 mm), the number of scale rows around the midbody (22–30 vs. 26–36), the arrangement of the postmental scales posterior to the mental scale (Types D, E, F vs. Types A, B, C, D), and dark heavy spotting on body (usually present in adults vs. absent). Geckolepis maculata can be distinguished from G. polylepis by a combination of the maximum SVL (< 80 mm vs. < 51 mm), the number of scale rows around the midbody (22–30 vs. 30–37), the number of infralabials to level of anterior margin of eye (3.0–4.6 vs. 4.0–5.5), and dark heavy spotting on body (usually present in adults vs. absent). Distribution: not on Mayotte where it is replaced by G. humbloti.
