DistributionS Thailand (Nakhon Si Thammarat, Satun, Pattani), Myanmar (= Burma), Malaysian Peninsula (incl. Pulau Pangkor, Pulau Tioman, Johor: Pulau Besar), Nicobar Islands, Indonesia (Sumatra, Java, Borneo: Sabah, Sarawak; Simalur, Sulawesi, Bali), Singapore

Type locality: not specified in original description (fide WERMUTH 1965, DAS & VIJAYAKUMAR 2009).
TypesHolotype: lost fide DE LISLE et al. 2013: 219
DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus): Members of the genus are diagnosable from other Asian gekkonid genera (except Luperosaurus), in showing the following characters: medium-sized to large (SVL to 107.8 mm); cutaneous folds on limbs and on sides of body; digits dilated and strongly webbed, with undivided transverse lamellae; terminal phalanges united with dilated portion to its distal end and extending beyond; inner digit clawless; dorsal scales small, typically intermixed with large tubercles; pupil vertical and males with preanal and femoral pores (Brown et al. 1997).

Definition (Subgenus Ptychozoon): Gekko (Subgenus Ptychozoon) is a maximum crown-clade name referring to the clade originating with the most recent common ancestor of Ptychozoon horsfieldii (Gray, 1827) Gekko (Ptychozoon) kuhli, and including all extant species that share a more recent common ancestor with these taxa than with any of the type species of other subgenera recognized here. Unambiguous synapomorphies for the subgenus Ptychozoon include the presence of a midbody axilla–groin patagial membrane (“parachute”), denticulate dermal lobes along lateral margins of the tail, expanded dermal flaps on anterior and posterior margins of the limbs, and the presence of extensive interdigital webbing of the hands and feet. Additionally, all taxa (the first-branching Ptychozoon lineage [Brown et al., 2012a, b]) possess enlarged, imbricate parachute support scales, an infraauricular cutaneous flap (“canard wing”), and a variably enlarged terminal tail flap (Wood et al. 2019).
CommentSynonymy: Lacerta homalocephala CREVELDT 1809 is preoccupied by Lacerta homalocephala SUCHOW (or SUCKOW) 1798.

Type species: Lacerta homalocephala CREVELDT 1809 is the type species of the genus Ptychozoon KUHL & VAN HASSELT 1822. Lacerta homalocephala is also the type species of the subgenus Ptychozoon (Wood et al. 2019, 2020).

Comparisons: Grismer et al. 2019: 169 (Table 5) present a comparison of most species of Ptychozoon.

P. kuhli is highly variable and may consist of between five and nine unrecognized, distinct species (BROWN et al. 2013).

Distribution: not in India fide A.M. Bauer (pers. comm., 19 March 2015).
EtymologyNamed after Dr. Heinrich Kuhl (1797-1821), a German ornithologist who was an assistant to Conrad Jacob Temminck. He also worked with Johan Conrad van Hasselt in Java before dying in Buitenzorg of a tropical disease.

See WERMUTH (1965: 154) and KLAVER (2007) for a discussion of the origin of the generic name Ptychozoon.
