Comment | Type species: Lygosoma crassicaudum DUMÉRIL & DUMÉRIL 1851 is the type species of the genus Opacitascincus WELLS & WELLINGTON 1985: 36. Limb morphology: 5 digits, 5 toes (Singhal et al. 2018, Cogger 2014) |
Etymology | Named after its thick tail (Latin crassus, -a = thick, dense, and Latin “cauda” = tail). The species name needs to be crassicauda, according to ICZN Article 34.2.1 which states that the gender of a noun in apposition must not be changed to agree in gender with the generic name, The Latin noun for tail is cauda and of female gender. For further explanations and examples see Böhme & Denzer (2019). However, not everybody agrees on this. The original name -caudum is supposed to stand as original name (crassicaudum), following ICZN Article 32.3 and 32.4 (Preservation of correct original spelling) or use the spelling in prevailing usage (crassicaudus) which is to be maintained (Article 33.3.1). |
