CommentSynonymy partly after PETERS & DONOSO-BARROS 1970: 132. The name Gymnodactylus panamae BURMEISTER was only used as a label in the MLUH collection but never published.

Behavior: mainly diurnal

Similar species: Gonatodes concinnatus; some of the records of G. caudiscututus from Colombia were based on Gonatodes riveroi. 
EtymologyNamed after Latin cauda, tail (animal); extreme part/tail of anything and Latin scutatus, armed with a shield. [“...The shields of the lower side of the tail are narrow, broad, extending from one side to the other...”]. (from Esteban Lavilla, pers. comm., May 2024)
