Holotype: USNM 94826 [cochranae]
DiagnosisDefinition (genus): The most obvious characters of the genus are the number of scale rows, which Leviton gave as 13 in Gongylosoma and 15–17 in Liopeltis, and the shape of the head, which is given as short, deep and convex in profile with large eyes in Gongylosoma and long, shallow and flattened with smaller eyes in Liopeltis (Lalremsanga et al. 2018).

Description (cochranae): Taylor 1962: 261
CommentType species: Coronella baliodeira BOIE 1827: 539 is the type species of the genus Gongylosoma FITZINGER 1843.

The species name is a noun in apposition and hence doesn’t follow the gender of the genus (Pauwels et al. 2003).
