Comment | Type Species: Lygosoma miopus GREER & HAACKE 1982 is the type species of the genus Haackgreerius Lanza 1983. Synonymy: Pape 2017 proposed to place Haackgreerius in the synonymy of Mochlus. Abundance: only known from its original description (Meiri et al. 2017). This is one of the species called 'lost' and 'rediscovered' by Lindken et al. 2024. |
Etymology | The name miopus comes from the Greek word for near-sighted (myopus) and refers to the impaired vision implied by the vestigial eye sunken beneath the undifferentiated ocular scale. The genus was named after Wulf D. Haacke (1936-2021) and Allen E. Greer, South African and Australian herpetologists. See Bates et al. 2022 for an obituary and bibliography of Wulf Haacke. |
