Comment | Nomenclature: This name is preoccupied in Cordylus by C. nebulosus A. Smith 1838, a synonym of C. cataphractus, but as the latter appears to be the sister species of all other Cordylus (Frost et. al. 2001), it required to be placed in a new monotypic genus, so that a new name will not be required (Mouton, pers. comm., STANLEY et al. 2011). Ovoviviparous. Abundance: only known from the type locality (Meiri et al. 2017). |
Etymology | The designated name, Pseudocordylus nebulosus, which literally means the cloudy or dark crag lizard, refers to its occurrence within the mist belt of the Hottentots-Holland Mountains, as well as its melanistic body colour. |
