DiagnosisDiagnosis: A small-sized species of the H. robustus spe- cies group within the arid clade of Hemidactylus characterized by: (1) small size with maximum recorded SVL 41.5 mm in the only known male and 39.1 mm in females; (2) 78 infralabials and 9 supralabials; (3) infraorbital, parietal and temporal region covered with numerous round unkeeled tubercles; (4) large anterior postmentals in wide mutual contact; (5) dorsum with 1214 longitudinal rows of round, enlarged, keeled, and posteriorly slightly pointed tubercles; (6) 6 preanal pores in males (only one male known); (7) 56 lamellae under the 1st toe; (8) 89 lamellae under the 4th toe; (9) enlarged subcaudals; (10) in life having dark brown irregular pattern on greyish body colour, two prominent dark stripes from eye to the shoulder region and bright white dorsal tubercles.

EtymologyThe species epithet is an adjective that refers to the Bab-el-Mandeb strait, the southern gate to the Red Sea in the vicinity of which the species occurs.
