CommentDistribution: Has been reported from Sao Tome but these records are doubtful (SCHÄTTI & LOUMONT 1992). Not in Angola fide Ceríaco et al. 2020. For a map with localities in Equatorial Guinea see SÁNCHEZ-VIALAS et al. 2022.

Synonymy: Perret (1975) and Kluge (1993) considered H. ansorgii as a junior synonym of H. intestinalis Werner, 1897 but Henle and Böhme (2003) have presented compelling evidence that the latter is, in reality, a junior synonym of H. muriceus.

Similar species: H. echinus, H. pseudomuriceus.
