DiagnosisDiagnosis: “Die zwei vorliegenden Exemplare von H. tenkatei unterscheiden sich von der Originalbeschreibung in folgenden Pholidose- merkmalen: 17-18 versus 16 Rückentuberkelreihen, 5 versus 3-4 Subdigitallamellen unter der 1. Zehe und 4 versus 8 Tuberkel im 1. Schwanzwirtel (7 Schwanztuberkel im 2. Schwanzwirtel bei ZSM 222/1912/2). Hemidactylus tenkatei unterscheidet sich von H. b. brookii aus Nepal durch eine größere KRL (57,5 mm versus 52,0 mm), eine robustere Körperform, einen breiteren Schwanz, größere Rücken- und Schwanztuberkel, gekielten versus glatten Oberarmschuppen und weniger Präanofemoralporen (14 versus 19-22) sowie mehr glatte Schuppen zwischen den Präanofemoralporen (5 versus 2-3). Von H. b. brookii aus Myanmar unterscheidet sich H. tenkatei durch gekielte Oberarmschuppen und dort fehlende Tuberkel (“Limbs scaled above and below, some large tubercles on anterior and dorsal surface of forearm, more numerous enlarged tu- bercles on dorsal surface of thigh and crus.” Zug et al. 2007). Von H. parvimaculatus unterscheidet sich H. tenkatei durch weniger Präanofemoralporen (14 versus 24-31) sowie mehr glatte Schuppen zwischen den Präanofemoralporen (5 versus 2-4). Anhand der Originalbeschreibung von H. subtriedroides lässt sich H. tenkatei vorläufig lediglich durch die weniger stachelförmigen Schwanztuberkel und eine offenbar deutlichere Rückenzeichnung unterscheiden” [from RÖSLER & GLAW 2010].

CommentSynonymy: The types of H. subtriedroides were misidentified as H. maculatus by ANDERSON 1879. Hemidactylus subtriedroides Annandale was considered a synonym of H. tenkatei Lidth de Jeude by Mahony (2011), but Kathriner et al. 2014 consider Hemidactylus (brookii) subtriedroides as distinct from H. tenkatei and suggest to retain the former as valid species. Lajmi et al. (2016) used morphological and molecular data to recommend the synonymy of H. tenkatei with the older nomen, H. murrayi.

Distribution: The Pulau Roti, West Timor and “Australian” specimens of subtriedroides examined by Mahony 2011 are likely introductions rather than naturally occurring populations. 
EtymologyNamed after Dr. H. ten Kate, the collector of the types.

Etymology (subtriedroides): The specific epithet subtriedroides is derived from the species H. subtriedrus with the Greek suffix –oides, meaning “like” or “looks like”, from which it was considered in the original description to be most similar in appearance.
