DiagnosisDiagnosis (partial): Vásquez-Restrepo 2018 provide illustrated comparisons between the Colombian Hemidactylus, H. frenatus, H. garnotii, and H. angulatus.

Description (specimen from New Caledonia): Head much longer than broad; snout obtusely pointed, longer than the distance between the eye and the ear-opening, once and two thirds the diameter of the orbit; forehead slightly concave; ear opening small, rounded. Body and limbs moderate, depressed. Digits free, or with a very slight trace of web, moderately dilated. A slight but distinct fold of the skin along the flanks, and another bordering the hind limb posteriorly. Upper surfaces and throat covered with minute granular scales, a little larger on the snout ; abdominal scales moderate, imbricate. Nostril pierced between the rostral and three small nasals; twelve upper and nine or ten lower labials; mental large, triangular, in contact posteriorly with a pair of pentagonal chin-shields, followed by a second smaller pair; the anterior pair of chin-shields in contact with the first infralabial and with its fellow mesially; the posterior pair separated from each other and from the labials. Tail elongate, depressed, narrower than the body, with sharp denticulated lateral edge : the scales on the upper surface very small, equal; those on the lower surface larger, imbricate, with a median series of large, transversely dilated plates. Brownish-grey above, uniform or with small indistinct darker spots ; lower surfaces uniform whitish. (from Boulenger 1883: 118).

Description (South Myanmar): An all female species. Adult SVL, 49–66 mm; TrunkL/SVL 39–46%, TailL/SVL ~120%, HeadL/SVL 24–26 %, HeadW/HeadL 60–72%. Top of head with small granular scales and occasional small flat tubercles, Suplab 8–13, Inflab 7–10; body similarly with small granular scales, ventrally larger, flat overlapping scales; all digit of fore- and hindfoot well-developed, each with oblong digital pad, lamellae of pads rectangular, medially divided except for terminal one, ForefLm 8–13 , HindfLm 10–15. (Zug & Mulcahy 2019)

Coloration (South Myanmar): An individual’s overall body color can change from light grey to medium brown, usually with darker postorbital stripes on head; in dark phase, trunk with 5 longitudinal rows of light spots; underside light from whitish to beige. (Zug & Mulcahy 2019)
CommentDistribution: Apparently absent from most of Melanesia and Micronesia.
Occurrence in Brazil and Peru is probably due to specimens with incorrect locality data. H. garnotii was probably present in Hawaii before the arrival of Europeans (fide McKeown 1996). Reports from the Mariana Islands probably represent H. frenatus (G. Rodda, pers. comm.).

Synonymy: "Hemidactylus peruvianus Wiegmann is a senior subjective synonym of H. garnotii. We agree with Kluge & Eckardt (1969) that use of this name would threaten stability. Although perhaps not technically a nomen oblitum, we believe that the name should be supressed whenever it is considered a synonym of H. garnotii. At least some Philippine populations formerly attributed to this species are in fact referable to H. stejnegeri (Ota & Hikida 1989b). All references to H. garnotii in the Philippines should be regarded as provisional pending further investigation of this issue." (from Bauer 1994)
EtymologyNamed after Prosper Garnot (1794-1838), French naval surgeon, naturalist, and collector who worked with Lesson. They were both on board La Coquille during its circumnavigation (1822-1825).
