Etymology | Presumably named after the Latin initialis (first, original). The name relates to the pentadactyle form of the species, unique in the genus at the time. The other Hemiergis species previously described had fewer fingers and toes, so this was phylogenetically, the first/primitive Hemiergis, as noted by Werner. (G. Shea, pers. comm., 9 Feb 2024) |
