Distribution | China (Guizhou, Yunnan, Xizang), Cambodia, N Myanmar (= Burma), Laos, Thailand, Vietnam Type locality: Yunnan-fu (= Kumning, Yunnan Province, China) invalid subspecies (now synonyms): chapaensis: N Vietnam (Chapa, Tongking). type locality: “Chapa” (Sa Pá [also Lao Cai], Vietnam); longlingensis [type locality: Longling Junior High School in Longling County, Yunnan Province (elevation 1530 m) (China) (original in Chinese)]. jinpingensis [type locality: Jinpling Junior High School in Jinping County, Yunnan Province (elevation 1260 m) (China) (original in Chinese)]. dushanensis [type locality: Dushan Junior High School in Dushan County, Guizhou Province (elevation 970 m) (China) (original in Chinese)]. |
Reproduction | oviparous |
Types | Lectotype: BMNH 1904.1.26.1 Holotype: MNHN 1948.43 [chapaensis] |
Diagnosis | Major diagnostic features: bisexual taxon; caecum and gonadal ducts not pigmented; pre-cloacal–femoral pore series continuous in males (TotPore 11–25), usually absent in females; chin scales bordering mental and first infralabial distinctly enlarged; digital lamellae formulae usually 3-3-3-3 (forefoot) and 3-4-4-4 (hindfoot); average adult female SVL ~41 mm, males ~39 mm; dorsal trunk pattern of narrow dark brown irregular transverse bands bordered dorsolaterally by longitudinal series of light spots, postsacral bar of dark and light with no anterior extensions dorsolaterally [ZUG 2010]. Detailed description: ZUG 2010: 50 Diagnosis (longlingensis): Numbers of scansor pairs on dilated portions of digits II-V usually 3-3-3-3 in hand, 3-4-4-4 in foot*2, fourth pairs on digits III-V offoot not reaching outer margins of the digits (Fig. 3); diameter of ear opening 0.7-1.0 mm, about 26-48% of eye diameter. The number of subdigital scansors of this subspecies are smallest among those of the currently recognized subspecies of H. yunnanensis (from Zhou et al in Ota 1996). Diagnosis (jinpingensis): scansor pairs on dilated portions of digits II-V usually 3-4-4-4 in hand, 4-5-5-5 in foot*2, fifth pairs on digits III- V of foot not reaching outer margins of digits (Fig. 5); diameter of ear opening 0.5-0.7 mm, about 19-27% of eye diameter. The number of subdigital scansors of this subspecies is greater than those of H. y. iongliIlgensis and the nominotypical subspecies. From H. y. dushanensis, H. y. jinpingensis differs in having relatively small fifth scansor pairs on digits III-V, which do not reach outer margins of digits (from Zhou et al in Ota 1996). Diagnosis (dushanensis): Numbers of scansor pairs on dilated portions of digits II-V usually 3-4-4-4 in hand, 4-5-5-5 in foot*2, fifth pairs on digits III-V of foot relatively large compared to H. y. jinpingensis, extending to outer margin of digits in most specimens (Fig. 6); diameter of ear opening 0.3-0.6 mm, about 13-25% of eye diameter; dorsal surface without pattern, or with only a few irregular dark markings (from Zhou et al in Ota 1996). |
Comment | Synonymy: after ZUG 2010. GRISMER et al. 2013 elevated longlingensis (5 specimens), jinpingensis (4 specimens), and dushanensis (2 specimens) to full species status based on DNA sequence data but without any morphological diagnoses. Sung et al. 2018: 369 (Table 5) provide a character table for these 4 species but the characters are largely overlapping. Distribution: see Figure 2 in GRISMER et al. 2013 for a map of this and other Hemiphyllodactylus species. Behavior: nocturnal |
Etymology | The name yunnanensis identifies this species as the gecko from Yunnan, the type locality of Boulenger’s new species. |
