Type locality: karst forest near Ban Nua Village (22o42.164’N, 106o38.317’E, at an elevation of 450 m a.s.l.), An Lac Commune, Ha Lang District, Cao Bang Province, northern Vietnam.

TypesHolotype: IEBR A.2013.20 (CB 2012.85), adult male Paratypes. Three adult specimens from karst forest near Ban Coong Village, Duc Quang Commune, Ha Lang District, Cao Bang Province, northern Vietnam: ZFMK 94781 (CB 2012.130), male, collected on 2 May 2012 by T. Lehmann, S. Herbst, and H. T. An near the entrance of a cave (22°42.768’N, 106°39.610’E, at an elevation of 601 m a.s.l.); IEBR A.2013.21 (CB 2012.137), male, collected on 3 May 2012 by T. Lehmann, S. Herbst, and H. T. An on a tree beside a forest path (22°42.864’N, 106°39.947’E, at an elevation of 435 m a.s.l.); and ZFMK 94782 (CB 2012.188), female, collected on 22 May 2012 by T. Q. Nguyen, H. T. An, T. Lehmann and S. Herbst on a rock boulder beside a forest path (22°43.202’N, 106°39.389’E, at an elevation of 448 m a.s.l.). 
DiagnosisDiagnosis: The new species from northern Vietnam differs from the remaining congeners of the genus Hemiphyllodactylus by a combination of the following characters: a bisexual taxon; average SVL of adult males 41 mm, of adult female 46.6 mm; chin scales bordering mental and first infralabial distinctly enlarged; digital lamellae formulae 3-4-4-4 (forefoot) and 4-5-5-5 (hindfoot); femoral and precloacal pore series continuous, 18–21 in total in males, absent in female; cloacal spur single in males; dorsal trunk pattern of dark brown irregular transverse bands; dark lateral head stripe indistinct; upper zone of flank with a series of large light spots, edged above and below in dark grey; caecum and gonadal ducts unpigmented.

Abundance: only known from its original description (Meiri et al. 2017). 
EtymologyNamed in honour of Professor Dr. George Zug, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution (Washington DC, USA), in recognition of his contribution to herpetological research in Southeast Asia, particularly the genus Hemiphyllodactylus. For biographical details see Mitchell 2018 and Zug in Schneider & Trueb 2021).
