CommentType species: Heterodactylus imbricatus SPIX 1825 is the type species of the genus Heterodactylus SPIX 1825.

Tribus: Goicoechea et al. 2016 erected a new tribe, Heterodactylini, for the genera Caparaonia, Colobodactylus, and Heterodactylus.

Synonymy: Because the type species of Chirocolus (H. imbricatus) is also the type species of Heterodactylus, Chirocolus is a junior objective synonym of Heterodactylus. Even though the genus name Heterodactylus is older than Chirocolus, Chirocolini has priority over Heterodactylini (ICZN Article 40.1); therefore, the valid family-group name for the clade including Heterodactylus is Chirocolini Gray 1838. Colli et al. 2015 defined the tribe Chirocolini to include Caparaonia, Colobodactylus, Heterodactylus.
EtymologyNamed after Latin imbricatus, overlapping like roofing-tiles. (Esteban Lavilla, pers. comm., April 2024)

The genus was named after Greek heteros (ἕτερος), of another kind, different + Greek dactylos (δάκτυλος), finger, toe.
