DistributionUSA (S Texas, S New Mexico, S Arizona), Mexico (Coahuila, Chihuahua, Sonora, Aguascalientes, San Luis Potosí, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, Durango, Zacatecas, Jalisco).

Type locality: "Matamoros, Mexico" (in error) via lectotype selection. Restricted to lower Rio Grande River, Texas and Matamoros, Mexico (latter in error) fide Coues & Yarrow (1878: 271). Sonora corrected to south of the Gila River in Santa Cruz or Cochise Co., SE Arizona, USA, fide Bogert (1939: 198-199), Stejneger (1940: 204) and Stickel (1943: 120).  
Reproductionoviparous. 
TypesLectotype: USNM 1282, designated by Cope (1900: 774). Other syntypes: USNM 7290, 1260

CommentSubspecies: SMITH et al. suggested to elevate Heterodon nasicus kennerlyi to full species status, based on two scale characters.

EtymologyThe specific epithet is a patronym honoring Caleb Burwell Rowan Kennerly, a surgeon in the United States Army who in the middle of the 19th century accompanied expeditions to the western US and northern Mexico where he collected amphibians and reptiles.
