CommentHeteroliodon torquatus has been synonymized with H. occipitalis by RAXWORTHY & NUSSBAUM (1994).

Type species: Pseudoxyrhopus occipitalis BOULENGER 1896: 613 is the type species of the genus Heteroliodon BOETTGER 1913.
EtymologyNamed after Latin occiput = "back of the skull", from ob- = "against, behind" and caput = "head", for the prominent, light-colored, dorsolateral neck band in this genus (of which occipitalis is the type species).

The genus was apparently named after Greek heteros (ἕτερος), of another kind, different, Greek leios (λείος), smooth, plain, and Greek odous (ὀδούς), tooth, for the heterogenous teeth in this genus.
