Type locality: Pionierbivak, Mamberamo River, NW New Guinea.

DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus and species): Internasal separates nasals, loreal and prefrontals fused on each side with narrow contact between right and left sides on mid-line of snout. No other homalopsid snake has this combination of characters (Murphy & Voris 2014: 22).

Type species: Heurnia ventromaculata JONG 1926 is the type species of the genus Heurnia DE JONG 1926. 
EtymologyThe species epithet, ventromaculata comes from Latin (ventro "from the Latin word venter "belly" + maculata "spotted") and refers to the spotted pattern on the belly of the species.

The genus was named after the collector of the species, W. C. van Heurn (Murphy 2007)
