Diagnosis | Diagnosis (n=26): Homonota chelemini sp. n. is a medium-sized species of Homonota (maximum SVL=44.4mm) belonging to the Homonota whitii species group composed of H. andicola, H. darwinii, H. whitii and H. williamsii given its genetic relationship (based on molecular characters). It can be distinguished from the other species of the group by the following combination of characters: a dorsal reticulated dark grey pattern on a greyish background, a whitish belly with chromatophores, smooth dorsal scales, cycloid subcaudal scales transversally enlarged, an oblique auditory meatus with a posterior serrate edge and a different average number of dorsal, ventral scales and scales around midbody than all the other species of the group (Appendix S1 for details and Figures S5–S9). (Morando et al. 2025) Additional details (2838 characters) are available for collaborators and contributors. Please contact us for details. |
Comment | This species is closely related to H. andicola and H. whiitii. |
Etymology | Named after Cacique Juan Chalemin o Chelemín, also known as the ‘Tigre de los Andes’, who was the chief of the Malfines, one of the several native peoples that inhabited the Diaguita district. He led these diverse groups (referred to as ‘Diaguitas’ by the colonizers) and their eastern neighbours, the Calchaquíes, in a rebellion against the slavery, torture and oppression imposed by the colonizers who sought their land and resources, particularly gold and other met- als. The resistance likely began between 1627 and 1630, with the first recorded battle taking place in January of 1632. In 1637, Chelemín was hanged and quartered in his hometown, his body parts displayed in various locations to break the will of the remaining native people. The re- bellion was completely defeated by 1643. With this name, we wish to honour the bravery and courage of Cacique Chelemín and, through him, all the native people of this area.
