DistributionS Argentina (Rio Negro, La Rioja), Paraguay (Chaco)

Type locality: Mendoza (“in den Schluchten der Sierra bei Challao”), Argentina.
ReproductionOviparous.
TypesLectotype: MLUH IZH R 1 (Fig. 9 in Cacciali et al. 2017); paralectotype IZH-R 2, designation according to Müller 1941.
DiagnosisDiagnosis: A large species of Homonota with a dark dorsal color (grey or brown) with a pattern of clear transversal bands connected with a vertebral stripe. Additionally, it is differentiated from any other Homonota by the large size and development of the keeled scales on the head (including laterals) and dorsum [Cacciali et al. 2017: 14].

CommentSynonymy mainly after CEI 1993. H. horrida has been synonymized with H. fasciata (ABDALA & LAVILLA 1993, CACCIALI et al. 2007) but revalidated by
Cacciali et al. 2017 (see also H. fasciata).

Distribution: reports from Brazil (Matto Grosso) need to be revisited after the revision of Cacciali et al. 2017. Reports from SE Bolivia (Cochabamba, Santa Cruz, Tarija) are probably H. septentrionalis.

Type species: Gymnodactylus horridus BURMEISTER 1861 is the type species of the genus Wallsaurus UNDERWOOD 1954.
EtymologyNamed after Latin horrida, wild, frightful; grim; horrible. [?]. (from Esteban Lavilla, pers. comm., May 2024)
