Type species: Hydrelaps darwiniensis BOULENGER 1896 is the type species of the genus Hydrelaps BOULENGER 1896.

EtymologyNamed after the city Darwin, Australia.

The genus Hydrelaps was presumably named after the Greek hydor (water) or the snake genus Hydrus Schneider (1801), plus Elaps (a smooth-scaled snake genus), in allusion to the smooth scalation of this sea snake. Derivation not stated by Boulenger (1896).
