Etymology | Named after the city Darwin, Australia. The genus Hydrelaps was presumably named after the Greek hydor (water) or the snake genus Hydrus Schneider (1801), plus Elaps (a smooth-scaled snake genus), in allusion to the smooth scalation of this sea snake. Derivation not stated by Boulenger (1896). |
